How do I apply for Food Stamps?

There are three ways to apply for Food Stamps: After you submit your application, you or a member of your household will need to be interviewed by DFCS.

You‘ll find out if you qualify for Food Stamps within 30 days after you submit your application.

Look Out
If your public assistance case was recently closed and you have children, you’ll continue getting Food Stamps for three months. After these first three months, you must apply so that you can continue to get food stamps.

What do I Need to Bring?
To apply for this benefit, you will need:
  • Proof of Social Security number
  • Proof of identification
  • Proof of household’s income
  • Utility and medical bills
  • Cancelled checks for child care or bill for child care
  • Proof of rental agreement or mortgage statement
  • Court order or cancelled check for child support
If you don’t have regular pay stubs to prove your income, see alternatives here.

The needed documents section lists all the forms and documents you can use to prove your household's income, resources, where you live, your social security number, your citizenship or immigration status, etc.
