What is it? WIC is a government program that gives women, infants and children healthy food and education to improve their health and diet. What do I get? Healthy food, nutrition and parenting education, and breastfeeding counseling. WIC gives you food coupons every month that you use at approved grocery stores to buy healthy food such as milk, cheese, infant formula, etc. How long do I get it? Pregnant women can get WIC for up to six weeks after they give birth and may be able to extend it for up to six months longer. Breastfeeding women can get WIC for up to one year after birth. Children can get WIC until they are five. Children must recertify with the WIC office every six months. 'Recertify' means that you'll need to show the WIC office that your children still qualify. You'll get a notice in the mail when you need to recertify. |
